Dwarf Alberta Spruce
Picea glauca 'Conica'
December 2006

The Dwarf Alberta Spruce is one of the most popular spruces. It is often used for live Christmas trees because of its almost perfect conical habit and sheared look. Foliage color is medium green with a slight bluish cast. Slow growing at about 3 to 4 inches a year. It will reach 10-12 feet in 60 years, but growth from 6 feet to maturity is very slow at about 1 to 2 inches per year. Protect from hot dry winds and intense hot sunlight. Grows best in full morning sun in sheltered locations.

This is an excellent plant for miniature gardens. It is excellent for group plantings where its natural shape can be maintained.

The Dwarf Alberta Spruce is an ideal plant to use in containers for holiday decorating and beyond! Mix with Juniper and Arborvitae for texture and color. These shrubs can survive in pots for years and will give you a look of classice charm. Use beside entryways, on the patio or deck. A combination of dwarf evergreens, pansies, and mums gives a great display of color throughout the cool season.

To insure the success of your container evergreen, be sure to follow the few steps below.

    • Use a pot made of a substantial, insulated material to prevent the roots from freezing. Concrete, stone or a heavy terracotta is best, however, some of the synthetic pots will insulate well too.

    • It is important to provide good drainage by using gravel at the bottom of the pot.

    • Avoid placing the pot where the northest winds can hit during the winter months. Southern exposure close to the foundation of the house is best to retain the heat of the day.

    • Remember to water! Evergreen roots grow even in the winter.

With proper care, you can maintain year-round color with the Dwarf Alberta Spruce and other evergreens.
