Japanese Beautyberry
Fall 2004
Callicarpa Japonica, or the Japanese Beautyberry is a deciduous shrub. Small pale pink flowers in 1" to 1.5" clusters appear in mid-summer followed by very showy metallic purple berry clusters in late summer and fall. The stems hava a purple tinge.

The Japanese Beautyberry is a medium textured, fast-growing shrub. It has a rounded habit, with arching branches. It typically reaches a height and spread of 4 - 6'.
The Japanese Beautyberry prefers well-drained soil, in full-sun to part-shade. This shrub is easy to transplant and will grow rapidly. Prune or cut back to 12" off the ground in early spring; as flowers occur on new growth. The autumn foliage is a yellow or greenish yellow with a purplish cast. Under the right sun exposure, plants can develop nearly pink or lavender fall color. Use in shrub borders or in groupings and mass plantings.
