Big Daddy Hydrangeas
Spring 2005

Big Daddy™

'Big Daddy' is a large
flowering Hydrangea macrophylla that blooms on both old and new wood for repeat blooms all season long. This unusually hardy shrub, produces the biggest (12-14” flower-heads) mop-head flowers ever. Flower color varies from pink in alkaline (limey) soils and blue in acidic soils. This shrub will grow 4'-5' high and wide, making it a choice for most gardens.

Each gigantic flower-head is composed of masses of tightly-clustered florets that radiate bright color. Perfect for fresh, and dried arrangements, ‘Big Daddy’ will add intrigue and romance to the garden with blooms from early summer through fall…an especially long time for a Hydrangea. Even when not blooming, Big Daddy is attractive. Dark-green, glossy leaves appear to be polished, on stems that provide a sturdy branching habit.

Unlike many Hydrangeas, ‘Big Daddy’ performs fine in the full sun, though it prefers afternoon shade. Best of all, ‘Big Daddy’ is easy to grow in the hot, humid summers of the South and the Midwest. Once established in good soil, this Hydrangea will prove to be a reliable performer with little need for special care. Over-the-top beauty doesn’t come along very often. ‘Big Daddy’ offers trouble-free garden grouping or commands attention just as an accent plant.
