Potted Evergreens for
Decorating Inside or Out

December 2005

Treat yourself to the classic charm of evergreens in containers to decorate for the Holidays and beyond. Dwarf Alberta Spruce, Juniper and Arborvitae are great for potting up. They can survive in pots for years and make great plants to use beside entryways, on the patio or deck. A combination of dwarf evergreens, pansies, and mums gives a great display of color throughout the cool season.

To insure the success of your container evergreen, be sure to follow these few steps.

  • Use a pot made of a substantial, insulated material to prevent the roots from freezing. Concrete, stone or a heavy terracotta is best, however, some of the synthetic pots will insulate well too.

  • It is important to provide good drainage by using gravel at the bottom of the pot.

  • Avoid placing the pot where the northest winds can hit during the winter months. Southern exposure close to the foundation of the house is best to retain the heat of the day.

  • Remember to water! Evergreen roots grow even in the winter.

With proper care, you can maintain year-round color with evergreens.
