3 Tips for Designing Beautiful Fall Containers from the Create team!

Updated: Sep 25

As the days grow shorter and cooler, your garden containers don’t have to fade. Fall offers a rich palette of plants and textures to keep your home or business entrances vibrant well into the season. Our Create container design team at Garden Heights put together three of their favorite tips for building fall containers that last, wow, and easily transition through the holidays, too!

Tip #1: Choose Plants That Last Through the Season

The secret to fall container success is choosing plants that are built to withstand fluctuating temperatures and shorter daylight hours. Some of our favorites:

Ornamental kale & cabbage – striking rosettes that hold up to frost

Pansies & violas – cheerful color all the way into November

Rudbeckia & celosia – bold blooms that keep interest through early fall

Ornamental peppers – fiery pops of red, orange, or purple fruit

By mixing these long-lasting plants with seasonal accents like gourds or mini pumpkins, you’ll have a display that stays fresh from the first crisp morning to the final fall leaf.

Prefer to Rotate?

If you enjoy changing your containers with the shifting weather, try breaking the season into two rounds of plantings:

Early Fall (before the first cold snaps): Mums, celosia, ornamental peppers and rudbeckia give that warm harvest look and thrive in September sun.

Late Fall (once temps dip and frost arrives): Pansies, violas, kale, cabbage, and grasses shine through the chill and keep containers lively into November and beyond.

 Pro Tip

Instead of replanting an entire container, refresh it by swapping just one or two focal plants in the center—quick, budget-friendly, and instantly seasonal.

2. Create Drama with Texture and Height

Fall is all about richness, and containers should echo that drama. Think beyond flowers and layer in textures that catch the eye:

Tall grasses like fountain grass or millet and stems like bittersweet add height and movement.

Trailing ivy or creeping Jenny spill beautifully over the container’s edge.

Bold, deep colored plants such as cabbage, kale, or ornamental peppers provide contrast against delicate blooms.

The key is to balance vertical elements with trailing plants while filling in the middle with color and foliage. This creates a container that looks full, lush, and engaging from every angle.

3. Transition Seamlessly into Late Fall

Your containers don’t have to stop at Halloween. With a little planning, they can carry you gracefully into the holiday season.

After mums and fall annuals fade, swap them for cold-tolerant evergreens like dwarf conifers or boxwood and cold-loving pansies for color!

Add natural accents like birch branches, red-twig dogwood, or pinecones for height and structure.

Transition decorative elements replace pumpkins with gourds, winterberries, or holiday greens for a festive update.

Pro Tip

When you’re ready to transition, don’t empty the whole container—just tuck evergreens and accents into the existing soil. This keeps roots insulated, reduces cleanup, and makes swapping seasonal décor simple.
